Nationally coordinated genomics approaches
The Communicable Diseases Genomic Network (CDGN) is working with member laboratories to develop workplans for coordinated approaches to whole-genome sequencing in line with Australia’s National Microbial Genomics Framework, for the following priority public health pathogens.
Salmonella and Listeria
Aims:
- To coordinate and standardise approaches to sequencing, analysis and reporting of Salmonella and Listeria across CDGN public health laboratories
- To support review of current and future business state of laboratories in relation to Salmonella and Listeria diagnosis and surveillance
- To explore opportunities for funding to support working group activities

Tuberculosis
Aims:
- To coordinate and standardise approaches to sequencing, analysis and reporting of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) for public health
- To facilitate timely and consistent reporting of TB genomics to public health units, TB Control Programs and clinicians, including approaches for quality assurance and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) reporting
- To advise CDGN on application of genomics of Mycobacteria to disease control in Australia
- To explore opportunities for funding to support working group activities

SARS-CoV-2
All Communicable Diseases Genomics Network (CDGN) member laboratories have established or have access to capacity to undertake SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequencing and analysis for their jurisdiction.
Teaching and training
The Communicable Diseases Genomics Network (CDGN) has established an expert reference group to review, develop and implement high-quality, end-to-end training programs including wet lab, quality, dry lab and interpretation and reporting, that increase the capacity for individuals and organisations to participate in public health pathogen genomics activities.
